On Sunday 27th June 2010 this little six week old badger cub was found by a farmer in a field on his farm in Ashdon, Saffron Walden Essex.

The cub a boar was on his last legs in the midday heat very dehydrated and starving... The young farmer’s son named him Roody.

Arrangements were made to collect some Rehydration treatment from the local Veterinary Hospital Mercer and Hughes whilst on route back to the home of one of the badger group members where the cub would be looked after.

A supply of special food was rushed up from Secret World in Somerset that arrived the following morning. An additional rehydration treatment was supplied by Bishop’s Stortford Veterinary Hospital.

The cub responded very well to the rehydration fluids administered with a syringe. And by the end of the week, he was able to feed for himself.

Over the next couple of weeks’, the cub got stronger and was reverting to type growling every time he was approached.

Badgers are very social animals and need to be with their own kind. It was not possible for this cub to be returned to the area where found. His natural scent had disappeared and replaced with that of his surroundings and would have been killed by other badgers in the area.

During the 3
rd week, the cub was transported down to Secret World Wildlife Rescue. Where he will go through the process of rehabilitation. This involves many people from the finder, carer, surveyor, landowners – as well as many people who donate to Secret World to make sure that their work can be carried out.

Roody was one of the lucky one’s, two other badger cubs were being attended to at the same time, both found at different locations in Essex with similar conditions. They both died within days of being found. too emaciated from starvation and dehydration. This hot dry spell has claimed many a wildlife.

Below are some pictures of Roody
