April the badger sow.

On Tuesday 28th April 2009 this yearling badger sow was involved in an RTA.
Some local lads came upon her injured on the side of the road and stayed with her to keep her safe from being hit again by a another vehicle until help arrived .

A thorough examination was carried out by the vet who discovered that the badger had bitten through her tongue Antibiotics and pain killers were given and a long period of rest was recommended.

During the first three days some concerns were felt that she was not very active this was put down to her medication and that she had, had a hard knock to the head from the RTA.

During the recovery period, the badger sett needed to be located ready for the badger’s final release. With help from the local farm manager, the sett was found and a date fixed for the release.

Ten days later, April as she was now named was transferred to a carrying cage and transported to the location of her sett, she was allowed to settle after the car journey, she knew where she was, after a few minutes had passed the cage door was opened and she ran very quickly into one of the sett entrances.

It is always rewarding to see the efforts of everyone involved to see a fully recovered badger return to its home.

Uttlesford Badger Group appreciated the young lads help, had they not kept her safe the outcome would have seen another statistic of a dead badger on the road. Our thanks to the Vet and staff at Mercer and Hughes Veterinary Hospital at Saffron-Walden for coming out at short notice to attend to April.
